Building Relationships With Spirits
The dead communicate with us in many ways. In my experience, they use several different methods to get our attention. For example, when you see people that look or sound like your dead. When people that you come in contact with tell you something you really need to hear at that moment and it leads you to a series of actions that are really beneficial. Animals and insects can carry messages from them, as well as plants and herbs. You may notice that when people see butterflies, they say that is a loved one who has transitioned visiting them. Some people also have this experience with certain flowers.
The dead often talk to us through books, music, films and television as well. Have you ever walked past a screen right as someone in the show or movie is saying something you needed to hear or be reminded of? What about when certain songs play and you instantly are reminded of the departed? Sometimes it doesn’t even need to be a song that makes you think about them, but they still use the medium to deliver a message. Do you find yourself attracted to things that are their favorite color? Do you buy their favorite brands? These are all subtle ways we stay connected to our dead. When we hold them in our memory and incorporate them into our lives, we strengthen the connection.
I decided to write about this because we are in a time where many people are looking to connect with their honorable ancestors and build deeper relationships with their dead folk. For me, this has been crucial to my spiritual development as well as my physical survival.
When two of my grandmothers died in 2018, this went into overdrive for me. I was with my Grammy who raised me when she transitioned. In the following months, it became crucially imperative for me to strengthen my relationship to the departed. It set many things in motion that required me to connect and commit to communicating with them, especially my maternal grandmother.
Committing to these relationships has given me the opportunity to honor and elevate my lineage in ways that only I can. It has also brought me peace, understanding and the ability to improve as a parent and family member to those who are still living. Over the last five years, I have had to learn how to decipher messages from departed spirits. It’s not always easy and straightforward, but once you start picking up on the techniques certain spirits use and what they are attracted to, the relationship grows. Both you and they are better for it.
If you’re someone who struggles to find support and understanding with people on the physical plane, you may greatly benefit by focusing on developing relationships with honorable ancestors & the spirits who support your highest good. Though you may not see them (or perhaps you will), you will be able to feel their presence, their love and their guidance every step of the way, as long as you are intentional. Your dead folk know you. They want you to succeed. They live in you and through you.
The simplest way to begin connecting to them is by offering cool water and lighting a white candle (or a candle that’s their favorite color) to welcome their spirit into your space. From there, you can speak to them out loud, write to them or even just go about your day within the space, inviting them into your life. If you know things they really liked while they were living, you can also offer those things to them. Anything from foods, liquor, tobacco, marijuana, the list goes on.
Free writing is a practice I highly recommend for when you want to hear from your honorable ancestors or dearly departed. With the water and candle present, you can ask for their guidance and just begin writing whatever comes to mind. The key is to not stop the flow that is coming through or try to decipher/correct it before you are finished downloading the message. This sharpens your ability to tune in to their frequency and better understand the subtleties of how it feels when they are communicating with you. If you don’t have a candle or other items, don’t stress. Everything you need to connect to your dead is already within you.
That said, I believe that just like people need translators, mediators and other trained professionals to help them relate to people on the physical plane in clear, healthy ways, you could also benefit from hiring energy workers to assist you in connecting to these entities. That’s why I have recently centered all of my services on assisting people who need it with Familial Energy Work, a term I (to my knowledge) created to describe ancestral veneration, lineage elevation, identifying intergenerational trauma & cycles, delivering messages from your dead and generally helping you build relationships to them.
This work is so important to me and I have decided to dedicate everything I have to helping others do this work. Black people who cannot afford the services but are interested in them should reach out, I will do sliding scale pricing and bi-monthly fundraising to cover the costs of people who cannot pay anything.

Happy Summer Solstice. I pray you honor yourself and your dead today.
