Happy Hoodoo Heritage Month & Happy October 🍁
I love that October 1st arrived on a Sunday, what a way to usher in the new month. Refreshing the altar, wearing white, and singing my grandparents’ favorite hymns have been filling me up in a special kinda way these past few days. You know me, I’m on ancestral assignments year-round - 4th House sun things. But in October, the focus on my bloodline just feels extra potent. So many other important things are happening while these spirits gather closer around us. The seasons are changing. My dreams are more vivid. The music I hear is touching me in places I forgot existed. Unnecessary things are falling away. Themes from the past are resurfacing for careful review…
And The Harvest is ripe if you’ve been doing the work. Even if you can’t pick the fruit yet, you can smell it. It’s a good time to reflect on how the seeds you’ve been sowing are affecting those who came before you and those who will come after you.
What are your dead folk feeling? What have your conversations with them been like? How much hope do you have for future generations? How have you been tending to your inner child? Tatianna Tarot brought up something in her most recent weekly tarot forecast about tending to the inner child of your ancestors. This resonated with me deeply, as September came with major revelations about similarities between my departed grandfather and my son.
I see and feel healing for this patriarch happening through my son and that pleases me. I also feel as though my grandpapa’s inner child could benefit from some extra love and attention, specifically for him. This was a man who didn’t really ever get to be a child. He was the oldest of seven and took on the responsibility of providing for his family when he was very young. Instead of going to school, he went to work. While he persevered to get his education later in life, I don’t know that the part of his adolescence that should have been spent having fun ever really came to fruition.
My grandpapa’s birthday was last month. He was a Virgo who knew well the meaning of hard work from a very early age. This month, I intend to explore what desires he had or would have had in childhood and how I can offer the spirit of his inner child some fun, adventure, and peace. As a means of bridging the gap, I’ll also be investing in more fun for my son, another diligent student and oldest son with significant Earth sign placements.
Examining the roots and the branches of your family tree with a spirit of care and generosity can teach you so much about yourself. Where you come from. Where you’re going. This is the essence of Familial Energy Work, a term I coined a few years ago. If you need a little help starting the process of connecting with your ancestors, check these out.
If you’re a musician or any kind of artist who is interested in involving your ancestors in your creative process, you may be interested in an upcoming space I’m facilitating called Sound Ancestors Studio.
If you want an invitation to the first Sound Ancestors Studio session, sign up for
and you’ll get more information later this month.By the way, I made a meditation for dissolving creative blockages, if you wanna check that out.
It’s on YouTube, but you can also purchase it here for download if you want a hard copy and/or you’re looking for a way to support me.
Instead of affirmations this month, I hope you’ll reflect on the questions above regarding your lineage. Go within and listen closely. Answers are closer than you think.
